Compress ODS Files

ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet) is the native format used by LibreOffice Calc and OpenOffice Calc — like XLSX, it's a ZIP package of XML parts, and raw numbers barely take up any space. A sheet with tens of thousands of data cells can still be small on disk. When an ODS file turns out to be surprisingly heavy, the usual cause is embedded media rather than the data itself.

A handful of habits inflate an OpenDocument spreadsheet well beyond what the data justifies:

• Company logos, photos, or screenshots embedded in sheets
• Charts and images stored at full resolution
• Formatting applied to entire columns or rows instead of the used range
• Leftover data, hidden sheets, and unused ranges from earlier edits
• Pasted objects carried over from other files

MiCompress opens the ODS package and optimizes the media it contains — downsampling and re-encoding oversized embedded images and logos — then repackages the archive with tighter compression. Your cells, formulas, charts, and formatting are left intact, so every calculation still works and every sheet looks the same. The output is a standard ODS that opens in LibreOffice Calc, OpenOffice Calc, and Google Sheets exactly as before.

Because the compressor targets the media parts of the package rather than rewriting the spreadsheet, everything that makes it work is preserved. Formulas still calculate, cell references stay valid, and number formatting remains exactly as set. Nothing is converted to static values or flattened in the process — you can keep editing the compressed file normally.

If your spreadsheet is pure data and formulas, it's likely already compact and there's little to gain. The tool helps most with ODS files that carry embedded images — dashboards with logos, catalogues with product photos, or reports with pasted screenshots. Those are the files that unexpectedly cross email limits, and optimizing their media can bring the size down substantially while every number and formula stays exactly where it belongs.
