Why Use MiCompress Add-on?

Works in Google Docs

Scan and compress all inline images in your documents. Images are replaced in-place with the same dimensions, maintaining your document layout perfectly.

Works in Google Slides

Compress images across all slides in your presentation. Position, size, rotation, and cropping are all preserved exactly as you set them.

3 Compression Presets

Choose Lossless for best quality (typically 20-40% reduction), Recommended for balanced results (40-60% reduction), or Extreme for the smallest file size (up to 80% reduction).

Secure & Private

Images are processed securely via encrypted connections and deleted immediately after compression. No data is stored on our servers. Your documents remain private.

Smart Resize

Optionally set a maximum width to automatically downscale oversized images while compressing. Perfect for reducing photos pasted from phones or cameras.

One-Click Batch Processing

Compress all images in your document or presentation with a single click. No need to handle images one by one — save hours of manual work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MiCompress Add-on free?
Yes, the add-on is completely free to install and use. There are no hidden fees, subscriptions, or premium tiers. All features are available to everyone.
Does it change the quality of my images?
You control the quality. The 'Lossless' preset preserves original quality while still reducing file size by 20-40%. The 'Recommended' preset offers a great balance (40-60% reduction), and 'Extreme' prioritizes the smallest file size (up to 80%).
Is my data safe?
Absolutely. Images are sent securely over encrypted connections, processed in isolated cloud environments, and deleted immediately after compression. We never store, access, or share your data. We are GDPR compliant.
What is the maximum image size?
The add-on supports images up to 25MB each, which covers virtually all images you'd find in Google Docs or Slides. Most Google Workspace images are well under this limit.
Can I resize images while compressing?
Yes! You can set a maximum width (in pixels) to resize large images while compressing. This is great for reducing oversized photos pasted from phones or cameras into documents.
Does it work with Google Sheets?
Currently, MiCompress Add-on supports Google Docs and Google Slides. Google Sheets support is on our roadmap and will be added in a future update.
Can I compress images in multiple documents at once?
The add-on works on one document at a time. Open the document you want to optimize, run the compression, then move to the next document. Each compression only takes seconds.
Will it affect my document's formatting or layout?
No. Images are replaced in-place with the exact same dimensions, position, rotation, and cropping. Your document layout remains completely untouched.
Does the add-on work offline?
No, an internet connection is required because images are processed on our secure cloud servers. This ensures fast processing and the best compression results.

How to install

MiCompress runs from an Apps Script project in your own Google account. Follow the steps below to set it up — it takes about 10 minutes, and you can remove it at any time.

What you need

  • A Google account (Gmail or Google Workspace)
  • A free MiCompress account, for your API key
  • About 10 minutes, on a computer (not the mobile apps)

Manual install, step by step

  1. 1

    Get your API key

Create a free MiCompress account (or sign in), open My account and press Copy key under API Access. The key starts with mc_. A free account includes 50 images a month — enough to try it; see plans for more.

  2. 2

    Create an Apps Script project

Go to script.google.com → New project. Click Untitled project at the top and rename it MiCompress.

  3. 3

    Show the manifest file

Click the gear icon (Project Settings) in the left bar and tick Show "appsscript.json" manifest file in editor. Go back to the Editor (the <> icon).

  4. 4

    Paste in the five files

Use the Copy buttons below. For Code.gs and appsscript.json, select everything already in the file and paste over it. For the other three, click + next to Files → Script and type the name without ".gs" (Apps Script adds it): CardBuilder, DocsHandler, SlidesHandler. Press Ctrl+S (⌘S on Mac) to save.

    Code.gs
    replace the default file

    CardBuilder.gs
    new script: CardBuilder

    DocsHandler.gs

    View
    SlidesHandler.gs
    new script: SlidesHandler
    View
    appsscript.json
    replace the manifest
    View
  5. 5

    Add your API key

Back in Project Settings, scroll to Script Properties → Add script property. Property: ADDON_API_KEY, value: your mc_… key. Click Save script properties.

  6. 6

    Link a Google Cloud project

Google requires add-ons to run under a standard Cloud project. In Google Cloud Console create a project (free, no billing needed). Open Google Auth Platform (OAuth consent screen) → Get started: any app name, your email, audience External (or Internal on a company Workspace). Under Audience → Test users, add your own Google address. Copy the Project number from the project's dashboard, then in Apps Script → Project Settings → Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Project → Change project, paste it and confirm. You do not need to enable any APIs.

  7. 7

    Install the test deployment

Click Deploy → Test deployments. Next to Application(s) make sure Google Docs and Google Slides are listed, click Install, then Done.

  8. 8

    Open a document and authorize

Open (or reload) any Google Doc or Slides deck. The MiCompress icon appears in the right-hand side panel — click it, then Authorize access. Because this copy belongs to you and is not verified by Google, you will see "Google hasn't verified this app": click Advanced → Go to MiCompress (unsafe) → Allow. It is your own script; the only data it sends out is each image, to the MiCompress API.

Troubleshooting

"Invalid API key"
The value in Script Properties must be exactly the key from My account (no spaces). If you pressed Regenerate, paste the new key — the old one stops working within a minute.
"ADDON_API_KEY not set"
The script property is missing or misspelled. Redo step 5 — the name must be ADDON_API_KEY in capitals.
"Free API allowance used" / "Monthly limit reached"
Your plan's monthly images are used up. They reset on the 1st of each month, or upgrade to Plus or Pro and keep going straight away with the same key.
The MiCompress icon does not appear
Reload the document. If you are signed in to several Google accounts, open the document in the account that owns the script (or a private window). Check that Test deployments → Application(s) lists Docs/Slides and that you clicked Install.
"This app is blocked" or "Access denied"
Your Google address is not on the Cloud project's test-user list (step 6), or your Workspace admin blocks unverified apps — ask them to allow it.
Can my team use it?
Share the Apps Script project with them as Editors; each person then installs the test deployment themselves (step 7). Everyone will use the key stored in Script Properties, so their images count against your plan.
