7Z is the archive format created by Igor Pavlov for the open-source 7-Zip project, built around the LZMA and LZMA2 compression algorithms. Unlike the Deflate algorithm ZIP uses, LZMA2 can reference matches across a dictionary as large as 1 GB instead of just 32 KB, which is why 7Z archives are consistently 30-70% smaller than the equivalent ZIP for the same files. Why a 7Z Might Still Have Room to Shrink
LZMA2's compression ratio scales directly with the settings used to create the archive — dictionary size, word size, and the number of solid-block passes. Many tools default to 'Normal' compression rather than 'Ultra' because maximum settings take noticeably longer to run, which means a large share of 7Z files in the wild were never packed at their smallest possible size in the first place.
