Compress ZIP Files

ZIP is the most widely supported archive format in the world, introduced by Phil Katz in 1989 and built into every major operating system without any extra software. It bundles multiple files and folders into a single container and, by default, runs each entry through the Deflate algorithm as it goes in. That makes ZIP the default choice for sending a folder by email, backing up a project, or distributing software — but it also means most ZIPs already arrived pre-compressed, which changes what 'compressing a ZIP' can actually achieve.

If a ZIP was created with normal settings, its contents are already Deflate-compressed — running the same algorithm over the same bytes again saves next to nothing, the same way re-zipping a zip doesn't shrink it further. The real opportunity for savings isn't the compression algorithm at all; it's what's sitting uncompressed inside the archive.

Instead of blindly re-running Deflate, MiCompress opens the archive and inspects every entry. Any embedded image over 10 KB — PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, or TIFF — is passed through the same image optimizer used for our DOCX and PPTX compressors, which typically cuts image weight by 30-70% with no visible quality loss. Every entry is then repacked into a fresh ZIP, preserving the exact folder structure, filenames, and permissions of the original.

This is why results vary by content: a ZIP full of screenshots or unoptimized photos can shrink dramatically, while a ZIP of PDFs, videos, or already-compressed JPEGs will barely move — there's simply nothing left to compress.

If the rebuilt archive isn't actually smaller than what you uploaded, MiCompress returns your original file unchanged instead of handing back a bloated 'compressed' copy. You never lose space by trying — the tool only ever moves in one direction.
