Compress PPTX Files

A PPTX is a ZIP package of slides, and presentations are among the heaviest documents people create because they are built to be visual. Every high-resolution photo, full-screen background, embedded chart, logo, and — worst of all — embedded video or audio clip gets stored inside the file at full quality. A deck with a dozen picture-filled slides and a couple of embedded videos can easily pass 100 MB, which is why PowerPoint files are the ones that most often refuse to send by email.

Vector elements — text, shapes, charts, and SmartArt — are unaffected and stay perfectly sharp, because only the raster images are touched.

If your deck contains embedded video or audio, that media is often the single biggest contributor to its size. Image optimisation alone will help, but for the largest presentations the most effective long-term fix is to compress heavy videos before embedding them, or to link to hosted video instead of embedding it. For everyday image-heavy decks, though, optimising the pictures is usually enough to bring the file back under the limits that matter.
