What Is a PNG File?
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format built for graphics rather than photographs. Unlike JPG, it can store a full alpha transparency channel and reproduces sharp edges, flat colour, and fine text without the fuzzy artifacts that lossy compression introduces. Why PNG Files Get So Big
A PNG stores the exact colour of every pixel, and a 24-bit PNG can describe more than 16 million colours per pixel plus transparency. When an image only actually uses a few dozen colours — as most logos and interface graphics do — all of that extra colour depth is wasted weight. Screenshots are the classic offender: a full-screen capture saved as PNG can easily reach several megabytes even though the picture is mostly flat panels and text.
