Compress PNG Files

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format built for graphics rather than photographs. Unlike JPG, it can store a full alpha transparency channel and reproduces sharp edges, flat colour, and fine text without the fuzzy artifacts that lossy compression introduces. That makes PNG the natural choice for logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams, and UI assets — but the same lossless quality is why PNG files are often much larger than they need to be.

A PNG stores the exact colour of every pixel, and a 24-bit PNG can describe more than 16 million colours per pixel plus transparency. When an image only actually uses a few dozen colours — as most logos and interface graphics do — all of that extra colour depth is wasted weight. Screenshots are the classic offender: a full-screen capture saved as PNG can easily reach several megabytes even though the picture is mostly flat panels and text.

MiCompress shrinks PNGs without turning them into blurry JPGs. It analyses the colours your image really uses and, where it is safe, reduces the palette and bit depth so each pixel is stored in far fewer bits. It then applies smarter filtering and a stronger DEFLATE pass than most image editors use by default. The result is a file that is byte-for-byte a valid PNG — transparency intact, edges crisp — but 30-70% smaller. Because the format stays PNG, nothing downstream needs to change.

For photographic images with smooth gradients, PNG is rarely the most efficient container to begin with. In those cases converting to JPG or WebP will save far more, but for graphics and screenshots, palette-optimised PNG usually wins.

PNG compression comes in two flavours. Truly lossless optimisation rearranges the existing data so it packs tighter — the output is pixel-identical to the input. Palette reduction goes a step further by mapping millions of possible colours down to the smaller set an image actually needs, which can be visually identical for flat graphics but is technically lossy for photographs. Our compressor leans on lossless gains first and only reduces the palette when the image is a good candidate, so logos and icons stay pristine.

The whole point of PNG is clean edges and see-through backgrounds, so those are exactly what our tool protects. The alpha channel is carried through untouched, meaning a logo that floats on any background before compression still floats on any background afterwards. Hard edges between colours stay crisp because PNG never applies the blocky, lossy smoothing that makes text look muddy in a JPG. What you lose is file size, not fidelity.
