Compress HEIC Files

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It stores photos with the HEVC codec, which packs roughly the same visual quality as JPG into about half the file size — that is the 'high efficiency' in the name. HEIC can also hold extras a JPG cannot, such as depth maps, Live Photo frames, and wide colour. It is an excellent capture format, but its efficiency and Apple-centric origins are exactly why it sometimes needs compressing or handling with care.

Even though HEIC is already compact, a modern iPhone shoots at 12, 24, or 48 megapixels, so individual photos can still run several megabytes each — and a camera roll of thousands adds up fast. Compressing HEIC files reclaims storage on your device and in iCloud, and it makes photos quicker to back up, upload, and share. HEVC compression is lossy, but it is one of the most advanced image codecs in common use, so a well-tuned pass is visually indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing sizes. Fine detail in skies, skin, and shadows is preserved because the encoder spends its data where the eye looks. As with any lossy format, compress from the original capture rather than a file that has already been re-saved several times to keep results at their cleanest.
