Why Recompress ZIP Files?
ZIP files are often created with fast, lazy compression — Windows' built-in archiver and many scripts use Deflate at default speed priority, trading compression ratio for speed. Tools like WinZip and 7-Zip compress better, but not everyone has them installed. Our recompressor unpacks the archive and re-encodes every file with maximum-effort Deflate (equivalent to gzip -9 with Zopfli passes), achieving 15-40% smaller archives from the same data — particularly effective for text, code, and XML files.
How ZIP Recompression Works
A ZIP archive individually compresses each file using Deflate (LZ77 + Huffman coding). Our engine extracts the archive, recompresses each file at maximum effort, and rebuilds the ZIP. Already-compressed formats inside (JPEG, MP3, MP4) don't gain much — they're stored but not re-encoded. But text files, JSON, CSV, XML, HTML, source code, and uncompressed images compress significantly better with optimized settings. The archive structure, folder hierarchy, and file metadata are preserved exactly.
When to Use ZIP vs 7Z vs TAR.GZ
ZIP is universally supported — every OS opens it natively without extra software. 7Z offers 30-70% better compression but requires 7-Zip or p7zip to open. TAR.GZ is the Unix/Linux standard, excellent for code and text. For maximum compatibility (sending to clients, non-technical users), compressed ZIP is your best option. For archiving your own files where size is critical, consider 7Z.

How much can ZIP files be compressed?
15-40% reduction from default-compressed ZIPs. The biggest gains come from text-heavy archives (source code, CSV data, XML). ZIPs containing already-compressed files (JPEG, MP3) see minimal improvement since those formats are already compressed.
Are the files inside the ZIP preserved exactly?
Yes, byte-for-byte identical. We only change the compression encoding — the actual file data inside is untouched. Checksums match the original files perfectly.
Can I compress password-protected ZIP files?
Password-encrypted ZIP files can be recompressed — we handle the standard ZIP encryption format. However, AES-256 encrypted ZIPs (created by WinZip or 7-Zip) require decryption first.
Why is my ZIP file not getting smaller?
If your ZIP contains mostly already-compressed files (JPEG photos, MP4 videos, MP3 audio), recompression won't help much — those formats leave very little data to optimize. The most improvement comes from text, code, documents, and raw data files.
What's the maximum ZIP size supported?
