How to install
MiCompress runs from an Apps Script project in your own Google account. Follow the steps below to set it up — it takes about 10 minutes, and you can remove it at any time.
What you need
- A Google account (Gmail or Google Workspace)
- A free MiCompress account, for your API key
- About 10 minutes, on a computer (not the mobile apps)
Manual install, step by step
-
1
Get your API key
Create a free MiCompress account (or sign in), open My account and press Copy key under API Access. The key starts with
mc_. A free account includes 50 images a month — enough to try it; see plans for more. -
2
Create an Apps Script project
Go to script.google.com → New project. Click Untitled project at the top and rename it MiCompress.
-
3
Show the manifest file
Click the gear icon (Project Settings) in the left bar and tick Show "appsscript.json" manifest file in editor. Go back to the Editor (the
<>icon). -
4
Paste in the five files
Use the Copy buttons below. For
Code.gsandappsscript.json, select everything already in the file and paste over it. For the other three, click + next to Files → Script and type the name without ".gs" (Apps Script adds it):CardBuilder,DocsHandler,SlidesHandler. Press Ctrl+S (⌘S on Mac) to save. -
5
Add your API key
Back in Project Settings, scroll to Script Properties → Add script property. Property:
ADDON_API_KEY, value: yourmc_…key. Click Save script properties. -
6
Link a Google Cloud project
Google requires add-ons to run under a standard Cloud project. In Google Cloud Console create a project (free, no billing needed). Open Google Auth Platform (OAuth consent screen) → Get started: any app name, your email, audience External (or Internal on a company Workspace). Under Audience → Test users, add your own Google address. Copy the Project number from the project's dashboard, then in Apps Script → Project Settings → Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Project → Change project, paste it and confirm. You do not need to enable any APIs.
-
7
Install the test deployment
Click Deploy → Test deployments. Next to Application(s) make sure Google Docs and Google Slides are listed, click Install, then Done.
-
8
Open a document and authorize
Open (or reload) any Google Doc or Slides deck. The MiCompress icon appears in the right-hand side panel — click it, then Authorize access. Because this copy belongs to you and is not verified by Google, you will see "Google hasn't verified this app": click Advanced → Go to MiCompress (unsafe) → Allow. It is your own script; the only data it sends out is each image, to the MiCompress API.
Troubleshooting
"Invalid API key"
"ADDON_API_KEY not set"
"Free API allowance used" / "Monthly limit reached"
The MiCompress icon does not appear
"This app is blocked" or "Access denied"
Can my team use it?
Or just use it now, without installing anything
The website compresses the same images with the same engine. Export from Docs or Slides, compress, and drop the result back in.
Compress images nowAPI key plans
Your API key is included with every MiCompress account and works in this add-on, the micompress command-line tools (npm, PyPI, Homebrew, …) and the HTTP API. The plan decides how much it can compress each month.
Free account
- Personal API key
- Workspace add-on, CLI & API
- Files up to 100MB
- Try before you buy
API
- Same personal key, 10× the free limit
- Workspace add-on, CLI & API
- Separate from your website usage
- Cancel anytime
Plus
- Same key, higher limit
- Priority processing queue
- No ads on the website
- Files up to 500MB on the website
Pro
- Everything in Plus
- Fastest queue priority
- Up to 100 files per batch
- Files up to 2GB on the website
One file = one compression. In the add-on, images that cannot be made smaller are left untouched and not counted. The API plan only raises your key's allowance; Plus and Pro share their monthly quota between the website and the API.
