Compress MP4 Files

MP4 is a container that usually wraps H.264 video and AAC audio, and its size is governed mainly by bitrate — the amount of data spent on each second of footage. Three factors push that bitrate up: resolution (4K holds four times the pixels of 1080p), frame rate (60 fps stores twice as many frames as 30 fps), and duration. A phone recording at 4K/60 can consume several hundred megabytes per minute, which is why clips straight off a camera are so much larger than the same footage after compression.

Video compression is lossy, but H.264 is remarkably good at discarding detail the eye does not track between frames. A single well-tuned pass typically looks indistinguishable from the source on a phone or laptop, even at 70-80% smaller. The trade-offs appear only in extreme cases — very high-motion footage, screen recordings with tiny text, or re-compressing a clip that has already been squeezed several times. For the best result, always start from the original recording rather than a file that has been shared and re-saved repeatedly.
